KIWI CONSERVATION CLUB - KCC

KCC Coordinator Caroline with a kakariki at the Festival of Cultures March 2005. Photo Adie LengWithin Forest and Bird we have a junior group called KCC, which encourages primary school aged children in their learning about the outdoors and what makes it tick. Activities include potting up and planting out in a local piece of bush, learning about worms, zoo trips and lots more!

They meet every 2 months and receive a local newsletter, as well as a national magazine. There are new leaders for KCC and a new programme started on May 16, 2004.

Manawatu & Tararua Event Update

Hello to all KCC families and friends – Spring is trying to blow it’s way here – I can feel it; see it popping, swaying, pushing to be here.  Just put your hand against a tree, on the ground or even hold it high up into the air, and you just might be able to feel a little Spring nudge.

Upcoming Trips

The next up coming trips in term 3, ending July and going onto October, which you, your family and some friends might be able to come to are:

Saturday, 22nd July‘ Family Adventure at Oxenham Bush’
Contact: Caroline Percy 06 357 0055 or 021 2642 789 – if you are interested and for further details. Oxenham Bush is one of the most beautiful remnants within easy reach of town; just south east of Massey University, up the Kahuterawa Valley Road, just out of Palmerston North.  We shall get our hands dirty planting some new native seedlings, have lunch then we may get a chance to go for a bush walk. You will need to bring along suitable outdoors gear e.g. each a rain-jacket, warm clothing, woolly hat, food and drink, sturdy shoes and some gardening gloves, and spade if available. Meet at the Kahuterawa Valley Reserve (where the toilets are), between 10 am and 10.15 am, and we will escort you up to the planting site on the far left hand side of the reserve.

Saturday, 5th August 'Geckos Galore' – Levin
Contact: Julie Curran 06 368 0799 - if you are interested in going and for further details Here’s a great opportunity to come and see a good variety of geckos at Michael Kean's Gecko Breeding Colony with Horowhenua Forest and Bird and KCC branch. Meet 10.30am at Thomas House near Levin.

Saturday, 12th August  ‘Bats and Rain at the Esplanade’  Contact: Zaneta Park-Ng 06 359 3846 – if you are interested and for further details. Join us at the Palmerston North Esplanade Community Education Centre (near the café), where we shall talk together, looking at 'Rain', and how, why, and where different weather forms.  We shall also be doing some activiites to help us understand how rain and clouds form. A speaker from the Department of Conservation will be coming to talk to us about our furry nocturnal native bats, from 1.30pm to 2pm.

9th – 10th September ‘Zoopreme Sleepover’ – Weekend Trip; Come along on this awesome weekend sleepover trip at Wellington Zoo.  You will be sleeping in a completely different atmosphere to home, where you have the opportunity to hear or see how other creatures sleep, wake-up and have their breakfast or tea.  This trip comes with a discounted price due to a grant that the KCC received, making it only $20 per person (adult or child). So … if you are interested and have not yet contacted Hellen Peek, then call NOW as only a few spots are left! - 06 357 5332 or 021 065 0754.
