2008 October On now: The Future of Food Roadshow This Ministry of Research Science and Technology roadshow is touring New Zealand and is at Te Manawa until 12 October Thursday, October 2: Science Café – Evolution 101 Speaker: Prof. David Penny of the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, Massey University. This is the first of two Science Café discussions focusing on the Theory of Evolution. It’s the central theory in biology, and has changed the way scientists view the natural world. But how much do you know about evolution? Find out what you always wanted to know about Darwin’s theory and what scientists today think about evolution. Saturday, October 4: eDay 2008 You can dispose of: computer hardware, monitors, networking equipment (e.g. modems, routers, hubs), scanners, keyboards, mice, speakers, laptops, printers, game consoles, toner and ink jet cartridges and mobile phones. Before eDay:Wipe all data from your computer's hard drive and remove any removable media such as floppy disks or PC cards. Ensure that your mobile is disconnected by your service provider and that contacts and other stored information are erased from the phone's memory. Also remove your phone's SIM card if it has one. Meet at the Picnic Area at the far end of Turitea Road. Bring spades, trowel, gumboots and lunch. Starts:10.30 am. Sunday October 5: Turitea Dam and Water Treatment Station Visit Organised by the Middle Districts Lions Club, a two hour visit is on offer. Tickets cost $20 adults, $10 children (12 years and under) and are now available from I Site. Monday October 20: "Prioritising Environmental Challenges: What Matters Most?" by Dr Jan Wright - Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Environmental concern tends to be reactive. The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment is able to work with her staff to set their own work programme. But this freedom and independence carries a responsibility to prioritise and carefully choose projects that can significantly improve our stewardship of the environment. All welcome!
