Living Lightly

 your body your wallet our planet

4 Wednesdays in April 2009 (and one Thursday!)

Living Lightly month in April 2009 is about being good to your body, easy on your wallet and kind to the planet. On four Wednesdays, there will be a different event in the Square, Palmerston North, or nearby, focusing on a different aspect of Living Lightly.  The Biker's breakfast has now been postponed (due to a bad weather forecast) to Thursday 16th April.

So get a group of workmates together and come along to take part or get involved with the business house challenges associated with the active transport events on the 8th and the 29th of the month (see iMove Workplaces at Sport Manawatu)

Waste Not, Want Not Day

Wednesday, 1st April, 12-1pm, opposite the i-Site in the Square

It’s no joke, A team of intrepid waste warriors will sort through bags of household waste to find out just how much waste could be diverted from those rubbish bags.Come and watch!  Households correctly keeping recyclable and organic waste out of their rubbish bag will be in with a chance to be handsomely rewarded.

But it’s not just about watching others.  Make up a team with some of your workmates to sort through a bag of CLEAN recyclables to test your skill at correctly separating them into different types. Prizes are up for grabs for the most accurate and fastest sorters.

Guess the weights and numbers of recyclable items in various containers to win other prizes.

Hear about the couple in Christchurch who each produced only a kilogram of waste that had to be landfilled last year. They recently had a party for 100 people to celebrate and produced no waste doing that either.

Learn about ways to decrease the amount of rubbish you create and send to the landfill

Free Bus Day

Wednesday, 15th April, free buses all day and free beverage 7-9am, near the central bus terminal

Thanks to the Regional Council for another free bus day (PN urban and Massey services only). So jump on a bus to get to work, or anywhere else you need to go on the 15th of April. You ‘ll save parking charges, get a little exercise on your way to and from the bus stop, and you’ll reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you contribute to the atmosphere. You might even meet somebody nice on your way to work!

If you’re going into work in the central city, stay on board all the way to the Main Street terminal to get a free beverage in return for your ticket and answering a few questions about your travel.

Bikers’ Breakfast

Postponed - Now Thursday, 16th April, 7-9am, outside the i-Site in the Square

Enjoy a leisurely ride into work and stop off at the i-Site for a free, healthy breakfast to the sounds of a local musician.

Have your bike professionally checked out and have your own fitness tested as well.

Lose kilograms from the waistline, save hundreds of dollars and prevent greenhouse gases being pumped into the morning air. We’ll work out just how many dollars and how much CO2 you’ll save.

Lots of prizes to be won so come along with some workmates, have a good time and be in to win.

This event is also part of the iMove Workplace Challenge so if your workplace is involved, remember to sign up and come to the i-Site each morning to get your card stamped. For details of the iMove Workplace Challenge, see iMove Workplaces - 30th March to 28th April on the Sport Manawatu website

Grow Your Own Food Day

Wednesday, 22nd April, 10-11.15am in the library;
12-2pm, opposite the i-Site in the Square;
3-3.20 pm and 5.45-7pm in the library (times to be confirmed)

This is Earth Day, and true to label, this event is about using and looking after the soil to grow some of your own food, even over the winter months.

From 12-2pm, opposite the i-Site, there will be demonstrations of winter gardening. This will include compost making, worm composting, cover cropping, as well as growing edible winter plants. There’ll be low cost seedlings for you to buy to plant at home and a seed swap – so bring your seeds along and share them with others.   There’ll also be people to talk with about various programmes and courses on how to grow your own food. Come along and learn or make some connections.  There’ll be some spot prizes too.

Also, seeing it’s school holidays, there’ll be kids activities related to food growing in the children’s section of the City Library in the morning (10-11.15am,  pre-registration with the Library required).  And then at 3pm, there’ll be films shown in the children’s section. Finally, at 5.45pm, in the Sound and Vision section there’ll be films for a more general audience about different aspects of food production at home or in shared community space.

Workers’ Walking Wednesday

Wednesday, 29th April, 7-9am, outside the i-Site in the Square

This time, it’s walkers’ turn to be rewarded for using their feet on the ground instead of on the accelerator to get to work. Walk in by yourself or with a friend and come to the i-Site for a free healthy breakfast and entertainment. Even if you come by bus or drive part of the way you qualify (as long as you get off the bus or park your car at least 1km from the Square, that is, beyond Cook St, Featherston St, Victoria Ave or Park Road).

You’ll be able to get your fitness checked out and we’ll calculate how much CO2 you saved from being emitted into the air by walking.

And there’ll be walking-related prizes to be won too. So come along with some of your workmates and enjoy a great way to start the day.

This event will include the prize-giving for iMove Workplace Challenge too. For details of the iMove Workplace Challenge,  see iMove Workplaces - 30th March to 28th April on the Sport Manawatu website.
