Who Are We?
Forest & Bird's Manawatu branch is a local connection to a leading New Zealand nature conservation society. Forest & Bird is a "hands-on" organization that depends on volunteers to make a difference.

What's On?

New Petition: "Sign On" for climate protection
Earth

New petition! Carbon emissions driving climate change is the defining environmental issue of our time. Strong political support for reductions in emissions is crucial. In New Zealand, the Greenpeace "Sign On" petition is leading the charge to ensure that when NZ goes to debate son of Kyoto in December, there is a clear popular mandate for a 40% reduction in global emissions by 2020. We need each of you to support this extremely important petition today by visiting www.signon.org.nz and by asking 3 friends to do the same.

"Earth Whisperers / Papatuanuku" at Cinema Gold

If you weren’t lucky enough to catch it at Reel Earth, here is your second chance! Back for a limited time at Cinema Gold (the one with the really comfy seats!)

A meditative film in which some of the best known names in the New Zealand environmental movement reflect on their relationship with our earth, Papatuanuku. It’s a virtual tour of Aotearoa and a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved through belief, dedication, and passion for our world. Craig Potton, Cath Wallace, Barry Brailsford, Alan Mark, Hugh Wilson and seven others to explain how our world moves them and what motivates them to advocate on its behalf.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways to become a participant in Forest & Bird activities. Please see the "Is There Something For The Kids?" section below for information on how children can start participating.

Becoming a Member

Members are an important part of Forest & Bird. When you become a member, you
• Contribute to nationwide campaigns such as promotion for marine reserves and raising awareness of the plight of animals such as the albatross and kiwi
• Support research into our native species
• Help Forest & Bird to lobby government on national environmental issues.

Being a member also helps you keep in touch with the conservationist community. Members receive
• An excellent magazine four times a year on conservation matters throughout New Zealand
• The newsletter of the Manawatu Branch including programme for local activities such as monthly talks on a variety of topics, and monthly trips/work parties.

Becoming a Volunteer

Without volunteers, Forest & Bird would not be able to function. Like any diverse organization, there are roles for people with a variety of backgrounds and interests. When you are a volunteer with Forest & Bird, you are able to help make a wide variety or projects work out. Examples of projects that Forest & Bird's Manawatu Branch has undertaken have included (but are certainly not limited to!)

Becoming a Donor

We also need funds to operate, so donations are always appreciated!

If you have any questions about how to start participating, feel free to contact us using the information at the bottom of this page.

Is There Something For The Kids?

Yes, there is! The Kiwi Conservation Club is a Forest & Bird project created to help children learn about conservation and why it is important.

The Kiwi Conservation Club is mostly aimed at primary-school-aged children. Activities include potting up and planting out in a local piece of bush, learning about birds, bugs, and fish, zoo trips and lots more!

The Kiwi Conservation Club meets regularly and enjoys a local newsletter as well as a national magazine crammed full of great learning tools for kids.

If you are interested in the Kiwi Conservation Club, please contact us at forestbirdmanawatu@gmail.com.
