Trees for Survival
What is Trees for Survival.doc(70.50 KB)The Trees for Survival Project involves school students growing native trees from seedlings, which will then be planted in areas either for erosion protection or to restore native bush in the region. The project involves a range of people in practical action to help solve and understand environmental issues. Over 60% of the Manawatu-Wanganui Region is hill country, making soil erosion a serious issue.
There are 14 schools around the Region participating in Trees For Survival. ENM as well as member groups (The Environmental Trust, Forest & Bird and Manawatu Tree Trust) support the following schools: Ashhurst Primary School, Freyberg High School, Linton Country School, Monrad Intermediate, Palmerston North Boys High, Ross Intermediate, Utuwai School. It is with funding from the World Wide Fund for Nature's Habitat Protection Fund that has allowed ENM an opportunity to be involved in this project.
Locally it is a partnership project between schools, landowners, Regional Council soil conservators, and ENM group members.

Planting out day Ross Intermediate pupils spent a day planting about 600 native trees on grassy hillsides near Kahuterawa Road. If all goes according to plan, this hillside will be self-sustaining bush in 10 years time. (Picture: Manawatu Guardian) | ENM-members sponsor special plant units, in which students grow up to 1500 native trees every year. Ongoing costs of plants and potting mix are also covered.
- Horizons.mw provides advice on plant care and organises planting sites in collaboration with landowners.
