Manawatu Estuary Trust

The Manawatu River Estuary (at Foxton Beach) is now a Ramsar site and an internationally recognised bird sanctuary, where migrating and NZ native birds enjoy the mudflats and wetlands. Click for latest bird sightings and articles.

Lots to do and see at the Manawatu River Estuary. Tide's in so the native waders are resting near the covered mudflats; bird watchers are returning along the spit and fishermen in the background making the most of the incoming tide.

The Trust's aims are:

Conservation   to ensure the sustainable use of the estuary's resources.
Education to educate the public on the importance of the Manawatu Estuary. CD Rom available.
Facilities to provide a Visitor Centre to showcase the values of the estuary.
Eco-tourism to encourage environmentally sustainable eco-tourism.
Research to encourage scientific research
Cooperation to cooperate with other organisations and groups, local and international.

Where to go for views of the Estuary

"Enter Foxton Beach via Seabury Avenue. Take the seventh turn left into Dawick St at the end of which is the viewing platform with a bird identification table sign.  If you wish to explore the Estuary, continue on to the end of Seabury Avenue to the junction with Holben Parade, another slight turn left into Pinewood Road takes you up to the Motor Camp.  Carry on past that entrance and you may drive into the Estuary if the tide is suitable.  Most visitors do a sharp left before going to the Motor Camp and park under the trees on the right hand side, keeping the children's playground on the left.  It is a short walk to the Estuary and the Bird Spit, which you can access by proceeding through a cutting in the dune and then bearing left again through the second row of bollards.  Beware of the mud.  If you want a leisurely walk on dry land with an opportunity to view feeding birds there is a beautiful scenic walk along the edge of the Estuary commencing at Carter Crescent all the way up to the Boating Club."
