Aims and Objectives
To create and manage a pool of bicycles for free publics use and as a result:
- Develop employment opportunities for disadvantaged people
- Create a community based, low cost transport system
- Promote the recycling of old bikes
- Encourage and promote the use of bike helmets
- Reduce opportunistic bike theft
Background
the initiative for the Green Bike Scheme originated in Amsterdam, Holland, where free bikes are available to public use , so as to help reduce air pollution levels.
In Palmerston North the same scheme was researched by a student from the Rehabilitation Department from Massey University, in conjunction with Pheonix (Inc), a supported employment agency for people with disabilities.
The community based transport system entails the recycling and restoration of the bicycles by the Green Bike's workshop mechanics to a specified safety standard. The bikes are then painted green and place at strategic points around the city for residents to use. The scheme promotes a low cost/maintenance transport system for all city residents to use, as well as promoting the use of helmets, exercise and a clean green image.
The scheme was launched in February 1998 and has been running strongly ever since.
