Environmental Education Strategy
Palmerston North City Council
Palmerston North City Council developed an Environmental Education Strategy in 2002, adopted by the Council in June 2002.
This strategy’s goal is “Creating a Sustainable City – Where residents are enabled through environmental education to be environmentally responsible.”
The strategy has five aims:
- To raise the level of awareness and concern for the state of the environment in the City.
- To encourage integration and co-ordination of environmental education activities in the City.
- To recognise the special relationships that Tangata Whenua have with the environment and ensure that their perspectives are represented in environmental education initiatives.
- To encourage and support the integration of environmental education into the school curriculum
- To develop partnerships between the City Council and other organisations to promote and increase the level and quality of environmental education in the Palmerston North area.
The strategy fits within the Palmerston North City Council policy framework and care was taken when developing the strategy to ensure that the strategy would complement the other plans, policies and strategies within the organisation. Essentially it is envisaged that the Environmental Education Strategy sits as a component under the Environmental Policy and is a tool to guide the implementation of environmental education components of the Strategic Plan, Environmental Policy, Palmerston North City District Plan, and other plans and policies.
