Resource Recovery - reuse and recycle

It isn't new.... it's about as old as humankind - and you can be sure that it is here to stay! Nature does it all the time well and naturally!

So why bother recycling, reusing and rethinking purchases?
  • Conserves resources
  • Saves energy
  • Reduces waste disposal
  • Avoids air and water pollution
  • Minimises litter
  • Can save money
  • Creates business and jobs
  • Helps your community
  • Assists those less fortunate
  • Costs you nothing
  • Puts off another landfill
  • IT'S JUST COMMONSENSE!

Check into the PalmyFreecycle group to access items to be passed on.

Are you an INNOVATIVE CITY RECYCLER? See PNCC's Innovative Recyclers Awards webpage.

What and How?

Household Items: Re-used by op shops, various social services, charities, gala days or sold at garage sales, auctions, second hand shops or through newspapers like 'The Standard' on Tuesdays. If beyond re-use, they may have scrap metal or other value.

Arts and craft materials: Contact Sue of the Arts Recycling Centre. Ph 06 353 2804

Building Materials: Most, in reasonable order, are saleable through building demolition recycling firms or through newspapers like 'The Standard' on Tuesday. Particularly so with components from period buildings.

Used Engine Oil: Some local service Stations are happy to be environmentally responsible and will take used oil.

Hazardous Substances: See the PNCC 'Haz-Wheel'

Clothing and Cloth: accepted at both Recycling Centres and throughout the city in local Social Services' bins and in various charity shops.

Organics - garden and kitchen: see the aerobic compost and mulching info along with the flower fridge magnet and worm composter info.

Horticultural - pots: bags, trays etc give to interested schools or clubs. Many want them.

Tyres: Retreaded if casing is sound. Otherwise useful as garage buffers, weights on silage covers etc. Farmers often find a use for them. They also make good swings and such like. Tubes make great plant ties. It is now illegal to burn them.

Drums, Crates, Pallets: Ring a merchant, check the Yellow Pages

Spectacles: Unwanted spec are accepted by many optometrists for re-use in third world countries.

Cellphones: Nokia, in association with Vodafone (in the Plaza), are taking a responsible line with this growing aspect of the waste stream.

Printer Cartridges and Ribbons: can be re-inked at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Contact Ink Tech ph: 0800 446 583

Bicycles: Take to the Green Bike Trust

Sacks: Sell them to a sack merchant
